My name is Christina Merritt and I started working as an Animal Control Officer in Trinity County in June of 2018. I was previously living in the Redding area and thus far am very much enjoying living and working in Trinity County. My whole family are animal people and growing up we had an assortment of pets ranging from rats to extra large dogs. I attended High School in Shasta Lake City and became involved in Future Farmers of America where I gained a love of Animal Science and Agriculture. After High School I attended Shasta College and then CSU Chico, graduating in 2009 with a Bachelors Degree in Agriculture; Animal Science. After college I worked at Cal Expo/State Fair and a number of fairs and expositions in the north state. In 2011 I started as a Court Services Assistant doing case management work in Shasta County followed by working as an Accounting Technician in the Finance Department. While my employment history took some distinct twists and turns during my 20's, it appears that fate had a plan in place since each of those positions contributed a piece of experience which is now coming into use.
Trinity County Animal Shelter has been blessed with fantastic shelter workers who are all caring, compassionate, animal lovers and it has been an absolute joy to have such an amazing team. I love working with this community's animals and people. |

Hello my name is Tanya and I have a wonderful spouse of 13 years and 3 wonderful human children and 4 fur babies(1 cat and 3 dogs). We moved to Trinity County in the summer of 2014 from Bakersfield CA. We moved and it was definitely an adjustment but a good one. I love it in Trinity County, I love it's beauty, the pace of life and the community. Before I worked at the shelter I can honestly say that I never saw myself working at an animal shelter. I actually never even thought about it. I love animals but didn't see that as what I wanted to do in my life. As we were getting settled I got an opportunity to work at the shelter through Calworks. I adopted my cat Ash in June of 2015 and my dog Chance in January of 2016. I also have 2 other dogs Zoey and Jasmine who we moved here with. Believe me there have been so many more I wanted to bring home. I left for about 2 years when I had a baby and came back to work at the shelter in May of 2018. I absolutely love my job it is the most fulfilling and gratifying, yet frustrating and heartbreaking job I've ever had. I hope to be working at and enjoying my job at the shelter for years to come.

Hello, my name is Crystal also known as the resident Crazy Rat Lady. I have been working at the shelter as an animal attendant since 2014. I was born in southern California but my family moved to Trinity County when I was 13 years old.
Since working at the shelter I have come to learn how heartbreaking it can be to work in a place like this but I refuse to just sit by and let animals suffer without doing something about it. On February 18th 2023 a dog at the shelter bit my thumb off. I am doing well and was back to work just a few short months afterwards. Yes, it was a pitbull but that fact has not deterred me from keeping it on my top three favorite breeds list. |

Howdy, I'm Dexter. I started working at the Trinity Animal Shelter a bit after the Carr fire in 2018. I was brought in with my two brothers but they got adopted and I didn't. My original name was Lieutenant but after the last office cat passed away and the shelter staff decided to replace her, they chose me and renamed me to Dexter. I like it here. My job is simple enough and when people come in I get a lot of love and attention. I used to have a friend, Alvin, but he was too friendly with the dogs and they were worried he'd be too friendly with the wrong dog one day and get hurt so he went home with one of the volunteers. It's alright though, I get to go in the cat room and play with the other cats so long as I bug the humans enough to let me in. The staff here call me heavy or chunky but I know tricks to get them to give me as much wet food as I want! These humans are easy enough to train to be obedient to my wishes and I know I can eventually make them see me as their furry overlord.
